About the event
“A light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory to thy people Israel.” (Lk 2:32) These are the words of Simeon, who received the Holy Family at the Presentation in the Temple. Simeon calls Jesus Christ the Light, and "the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (Jn 1:5) The Feast of the Presentation, otherwise known as "Candlemas", is often celebrated on Feb. 2.
It is tradition within the Catholic Church to have candles used at home and in the Liturgy blessed on Candlemas. In addition, another way to celebrate this Feast, is to take winter greens left over from Christmas and then burn them on Candlemas, and spreading their ashes on fields or gardens for a healthy spring harvest.
As we conclude the Christmas season, join us in celebrating the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and for the burning of the greens, a family-friendly event at St. Catherine's! Learn more about Candlemas and other ways to celebrate HERE.
